Open roads. Safe decisions. Every rider, every race.
Three rules that come first.
You must obey New Zealand road rules at all times. Racing, a cone or a marshal does not give you priority over traffic. Your safety and the safety of others come before your time.
Tai Tapu turnaround: a safe, legal U-turn.
You must navigate around the designated turnaround cone. Slow down, check behind and in both directions, signal when safe, and give way to vehicles and other road users. Only turn when the road is clear and you can complete the manoeuvre safely and legally.
Do not turn in front of vehicles or force a driver to brake or swerve. If it is not safe, wait. Do not cut inside the cone.
Follow the race briefing and any instruction to stop. The cone marks the course; it does not close the road or give you right of way.
Keep as far left as safely practicable.
Do not ride unnecessarily in the middle of the lane. Keep left, hold a predictable line and allow other road users to pass safely.
Leave enough room to avoid the road edge, debris, potholes and other hazards. Move right only when needed for safety, a lawful pass or a lawful turn, checking traffic first. Return left when safe.
After the finish: pull left, stop. No U-turn.
After crossing the finish line, slow down under control, check behind, pull over to the left in a safe place clear of the finish and moving traffic, and stop. Do not brake abruptly on the line or obstruct riders finishing behind you.
You must not make a U-turn after stopping. Follow the finish marshal’s instructions before leaving the finish area.
Road safety & race conduct
Open roads and marshals
The whole course remains open to normal traffic, including side roads, driveways and accessways. Obey signs, road markings, give-way requirements and New Zealand traffic law. Marshals may stop riders; do not assume they will stop motor vehicles. Comply immediately with instructions to stop or give way at corners, turns and one-way bridges.
Your line and the course
Stay on the designated course. Do not cross the centre line to race, overtake unsafely or finish. The designated turnaround must be completed only as a safe, legal manoeuvre under rule 1 above. Ride cautiously on rural roads, especially around corners where grit, mud, animal waste or potholes may be present.
Respect and fair racing
Be courteous to motorists, residents, other riders, officials and volunteers. Ride within your abilities, remain in control and follow the event briefing. Dangerous riding or disobeying road rules can result in disqualification. Repeated unsafe behaviour can result in exclusion from the series.
Accidents and emergencies
If an incident occurs, stop safely to check on affected riders. Call 111 when emergency assistance is needed, give your location, and provide assistance within your abilities. Notify the nearest marshal or the race organiser as soon as possible. Do not put yourself or others in further danger.
Before you race
Registration and briefing
Complete registration and race entry, provide accurate contact and emergency-contact details, and arrive in time for sign-on and the mandatory race briefing. Follow the sign-on and briefing times published for that Tuesday. Read the course instructions and any event updates before starting.
Fitness and equipment
You are responsible for arriving fit and sufficiently trained for your chosen event. Your bicycle must be roadworthy with effective brakes. Wear a properly fitted, approved cycle helmet and use the lights and reflectors required for the conditions.
Payment and event arrangements
Follow the payment instructions in the entry form. If cash payment is offered, bring the exact amount; a cash float may not be available. The podium presentation takes place once everyone has finished. Podium winners are required to stay for the presentation and podium photos.
Participant conditions
Acknowledgement of risk
Road cycling involves inherent risks, including collisions, falls, injury and damage to equipment or other property. By entering, you acknowledge these risks and your responsibility to ride safely, obey the law and comply with the event rules.
Personal responsibility and insurance
You remain responsible for your conduct and for making safe decisions throughout the event. Arrange any personal accident or property insurance you require; do not assume your entry fee provides insurance cover.
Waiver and release
To the extent permitted by New Zealand law, you agree to release and hold harmless the event organiser, sponsors, partners and affiliates from claims, damages or liabilities arising from injury or loss connected with your participation, including claims of negligence. Nothing in these terms excludes any right, liability or duty that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Acceptance of event conditions
By entering, you agree to these terms, the road-safety rules above and the instructions issued by event officials. Event instructions do not override New Zealand law or remove your responsibility to stop when it is unsafe to proceed.
Media and promotion
By entering, you permit the use of your name, voice and image in event-related reporting and promotion, including broadcasts, photographs, video and advertising, without payment.
Changes to the event
The organiser may change the route, format, timing or other event arrangements where required by weather, safety, legal or administrative circumstances. Read event updates and follow the instructions given for your race.
